CHORALIER AUDITIONS 2025-2026
Choralier Auditions '25-'26 will be January 13-14, 2025
Part 1: January 13th (Singing, Sightreading, Musical Skills) 2:30-7:00
Students wishing to be considered for Choraliers will be adjudicated on the following criteria during this audition:
Singing (32 bar selection)
Sightreading (both rhythmic and melodic)
Aural Skill Assessment
Singing-
Students need to prepare 32 bars of a song that demonstrates their singing skills. The song must be memorised and you will need to provide your own accompaniment (recorded piano, karaoke, instrumental accompaniment, etc.). Your singing example will be videotaped and shared with a minimum of 5 expert music/theatre teachers who will adjudicate the performance using the singing rubric.
Sightreading-
Students will read a rhythm and melody, which will be videotaped. Dr. Younse will assess this performance using a rubric.
Aural Skills-
Students will sing various melodic patterns after hearing them played on the piano. This audition will be videotaped. Dr. Younse will assess this performance using a rubric.
PART 2: January 14- Group Singing/Blending/Performance Quality- 5:00-6:30
You need to prepare the cut of World For Christmas which you will find below. When you come to the audition, applicants will sing a short excerpt with members of the current Choraliers. We are looking for how well you blend into the group- are you singing in tune, do your vowels blend with the group, does your stage presence blend with the group, and are you prepared on your part? This audition will be taped and assessed by Dr. Younse using a rubric.
Part 3: Professionalism Score
As Choraliers is our Honors Choral Class at Hall and represents the choirs and the school among the community, your professionalism is an important part of your application. You must provide two teacher names and emails that are willing to support your application for Choraliers. You will submit your teacher's names and emails no later than January 10th. Your teacher references will be sent a Google form by Monday, Jan. 13 and will have until Friday, Jan. 17, to complete and submit the report. Dr. Younse will also complete the rubric, which is worth 40 points total (120 points collectively). These 120 points make ur your Professionalism Score. (When you ask your teachers to support you, you need to make sure they understand the deadline of Jan 17. If they fail to fill out the form, you will lose their 40 points on Professionalism Score.) Please make sure your references understand the timeline and that they are willing to abide by it. Not having a form returned will affect your final score.
Part 4: Scoring
Singing- There will be a minimum of five music and theatre teachers from the district (including Doc) who will watch each 32-bar song and complete the Singing Rubric (See the Rubric Below.) The 5 adjudicator scores will be added together to form the final Singing Score.
Sightreading/Aural Skills Dr. Younse will score each of this criterion using a separate rubric. There will be a Sightreading and Aural Skills score
Group SInging/Blending/Performance Quality- Dr. Younse will use the Group Singing/Performance Quality rubric (see below) to score this audition.
Finally, the two teacher recommendations along with Doc's make up the Professionalism Score.
Final Score
The final score for each applicant will consist of the composite singing score, Sightreading/ score, Aural Skills score, Blending Score, and Professionalism score. These five scores will be added to identify the singer’s final score.
Selection
Dr. Younse will run the final scores by section (S,A,T,B) and determine the ranking for each. The highest score(s) in each section will be named to Choraliers until the number for each section is complete. It usually takes 10 days or so to receive all of the rubrics back from our music teacher adjudicators. Once everything is in place, Doc will post the results on the website.
